There are three major things to consider when redesigning a kitchen - function, style, and flow. Keeping these major parts in mind helps to assure that the design is a success.

Function - Firstly, a kitchen needs to serve its purpose. Cooking and storing food, and cleaning up after meals - these are the main functions of a kitchen. Are the appliances serving their purpose? Are they outdated? Do you serve a lot of guests? If so, maybe add an ice machine. Or a double oven. Consider adding a waste basket pull out to the cabinets, or a wine fridge. The options are limitless when it comes to making your kitchen function as you wish.

Style - Your kitchen should be pleasing to you, and inviting to guests. You should consider the color and style of the appliances, the cabinets, the tile or wood floors, and the paint on the walls. Your design / build contractor will be happy to help you coordinate styles, patterns, and colors to create the atmosphere you are looking for.

Flow - Where do you want your refrigerator? It can be moved to a different location. Where should the pull out trash bins be located? What kind of island do you want? Or you can eliminate an island or peninsula that has always seemed in the way. The flow of your kitchen is important, having the different elements arranged in such a way that makes them easy to use.

Keeping these points in mind, and having a trustworthy design / build contractor to discuss options with will help you to achieve your goals in a kitchen remodel.
