Secrets 2 and 3

Secret #2: Know the firm and what you are getting.

Don't make assumptions. No two remodeling firms are identical nor will they deliver an identical project or remodeling experience, even if they quote the same price. So, don't make assumptions. Go over the proposal carefully to make sure the firm will provide you with the specific quality, process, time frame and remodeling experience you're expecting. There are many ways for remodelers to cut corners to submit a lower estimate. Some of these ways are legal ( though not in your best interest ) and some are just plain against the law. If there's a big difference in prices you get from two remodelers, chances are they are not both pricing your project using the same quality of materials, labor or project management. The lower - priced remodeler may not be licensed, insured, or financially sound; they might not hire quality craftsmen, pay workers comp insurance, or pull permits. ( They may even want to pull permits in your name so you're on the line to fix - and pay for - anything that doesn't pass inspection. ) The lower price may mean little care will be taken to control dust and protect floors, walls, and furniture. Plus, with a less reputable remodeler, there's a risk they may leave the project unfinished. Check out the article on the main website called "Priced For Problems".
