Secrets 6 and 7

Secret 6: Always Check References.

When you do, ask hard questions that can uncover the "real story." Also, ask for recent references and old ones so you can see how the remodeler's work held up over time. On our website we provide a list of suggested questions.

Secret 7: Remember that "resale" is just PART of your remodeling ROI.

In any market, an improved home usually sells more quickly and commands a better price than an unimproved home. The amount of actual ROI (Return On Investment), however, depends on market conditions when you sell - which, as you know, can be unpredictable. That's why it's important to consider the second type of ROI you recieve from a remodeling investment: the predictable benefits you and your family will enjoy from the remodeling project. Regardless of whether you recoup some or all of your investment when you sell, you get to enjoy the daily dividend of your investment in the form of a more functional, beautiful home. So, remember that you are not remodeling for the next owner of your home - you're remodeling for you. The ideal choice, then, is a remodeler who can customize your home for your tastes and lifestyle today, while making sure the quality and functionality of the remodeling project will support resale in years to come.

Do the math. Suppose you plan on living in your home for 10 or more years and plan to remodel the kitchen in 5 years. By remodeling now, you double the number of years you benefit from the added function, comfort, beauty and enjoyment of your remodeled kitchen. Thus, if you'll eventually invest the money in remodeling, investing it now instead of waiting - e.g., remodeling the kitchen and updating a bath - can greatly increase your pleasure as well as the value of your home.
